Share a Registry: Add a Collaborator

A registry is rarely a one-person job. Invite a partner, parent or friend to help build it — they get the same editing powers you have, on the same registry.

What collaborators are

A collaborator is someone you invite to help manage one of your registries. Once they accept, the registry shows up in their “My Registries” too, and they can edit it side-by-side with you — no more copy-pasting links or sharing one login.

It's perfect for the people planning something together:

  • A couple building one wedding registry from two laptops
  • Both parents adding to a baby registry
  • A friend or family member helping a host set up a shower

How to invite a collaborator

  1. Open My Registries.
  2. On the registry you want to share, click the gear (Edit) button.
  3. Scroll to the Share editing section near the bottom.
  4. Type the person's email address and click Invite.
  5. That's it — they're emailed right away, and you'll see them listed as a collaborator.
Use the email address your collaborator already uses (or would use) for Gift List — that's how we connect the invite to their account.

What the other person receives

What happens depends on whether they already have a Gift List account:

  • If they already have an account
    They get instant access and an email letting them know you've shared the registry. It appears under their “My Registries” the next time they sign in — nothing else to do.
  • If they don't have an account yet
    They get an email inviting them to create a free account. It's one click if they use “Continue with Google.” As soon as they sign up with that email, the shared registry appears automatically — no codes to enter.

What a collaborator can (and can't) do

Collaborators have the same editing powers as you on that registry:

  • Add, edit, reorder and remove gift items
  • Use the “paste a link” quick-fill and the browser extension
  • Change the title, URL, event date, description, theme and cover
  • Change who can see the registry (public, unlisted, password, invite-only, private)

To keep things safe, a couple of actions stay with the original owner only:

  • Deleting the whole registry — only the owner can do this.
  • Inviting or removing other collaborators — only the owner manages the people list.

Removing a collaborator

Changed your mind? Open the registry's Edit dialog, find the person under Share editing, and click the next to their name. Their access is removed immediately and the registry disappears from their account. You can re-invite them any time.

Privacy & safety

  • Only people you invite by email get access — there's no public “join” link.
  • Collaborators only see the specific registry you shared — not your other registries or your account.
  • You stay the owner and can remove anyone at any time.

Frequently asked questions

They'll need a free account to edit, but they don't need one to be invited. If they don't have one, the invite walks them through creating it — one click with Google — and the registry appears automatically once they sign up with the invited email.

As many as you like. Invite your partner, both sets of grandparents-to-be, a wedding planner — whoever is helping.

No. Collaborators can change settings and items, but only the owner can delete the whole registry or manage the list of collaborators.

Make sure they signed in (or signed up) with the exact email you sent the invite to. The registry appears automatically the first time they sign in with that address. If it still doesn't show, ask them to sign out and back in, or re-send the invite from the Edit dialog.

Collaborators have the same view of the registry as the owner. If you want to keep gift purchases a surprise, that setting applies to the registry as a whole rather than per-person.
