How to Turn Your Amazon Wish List Into a Real Gift Registry

If you're planning a wedding, a baby shower or a big birthday, chances are you already have an Amazon wish list. It's where most of us start — adding things we like, one click at a time.

The trouble starts when you try to use that wish list as a registry. A wish list can only hold things Amazon sells. It can't collect money toward a honeymoon. It can't let five friends split the cost of a stroller. And your guests get a plain list with no photos of you, no event date, and no way to say who's buying what without everyone seeing everything.

Wish list vs. registry: what you're missing

And to be clear about one thing: importing doesn't take anything away from Amazon. Your Amazon items still link to Amazon, guests still buy them on Amazon, and your original wish list is untouched.

Moving your list over: 4 steps

1. Make your Amazon list shareable

Open your wish list on Amazon and tap Invite (on some screens it's Share), then choose View only. If your list is set to Private, switch it to Shared first — Amazon only lets guests (and importers) see shared lists. Copy the link it gives you; it looks like `amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/ABC123XYZ`.

2. Paste it into Gift List

Create a free account if you don't have one, then go to Dashboard → Import Registry and paste the link. A few seconds later you'll see every item from your list — photos, prices and quantities included. Long lists are fine; we'll fetch around a hundred items.

3. Untick what you don't want

This is a natural moment to prune. That air fryer you added at 1 a.m. in 2023? Leave it unticked. Everything you keep goes into a brand-new registry (named after your list) or into one you've already started — duplicates are skipped automatically.

4. Make it yours

Now do the things a wish list never could:

• Add gifts from any other store — paste a link from Etsy, IKEA, a local boutique, anywhere. Our browser extension and apps make it one click.

A note on prices

A few items may come over without a price — that usually means Amazon is hiding it (out of stock, or a deal that ended). Open the item on your registry and hit re-fetch, or type it in. Everything else is editable too.

Does importing change or delete my Amazon wish list?

No. We read your list the same way a guest with the share link would. Nothing on Amazon is changed, and nobody is notified.

Do my Amazon items still link to Amazon?

Yes — guests click through and buy on Amazon like they always would. The difference is your registry can also hold gifts from every other store, plus cash funds and group gifts.

Is this really free?

Yes. Registries, importing, apps and the extension are all free. Gift List is supported by small affiliate commissions from stores — never added to prices — and a 5% fee on cash-fund contributions that covers card processing.
